2010 KTM 1190 RC8R Review

I have dropped enough to lust Ducati over the years that I am skeptical about the competition from other European V-twin sports bike contender. How can a company compete with legendary racing history of Ducati, and artistic, sensuous design?

Well, KTM, long known for his intelligent off-road, do so by being different - mostly. A look at the 2010 KTM 1190 RC8R is all you need to know that it was not designed by an Italian. KTM is based in Austria (as a designer Gerald Kiska has worked with KTM since 1991) just one day riding on the Stelvio Pass in Italy, but there is no doubt KTM is not Italian Teutonic design language. Perhaps the RC8R distinctive design is the result of the location of Austria nestled between Italy and Germany: the cold, engineer focused on the German influence mixed with the romance of Latin Europe.

RC8R chiseled design creates a sense wherever it stops. If an F-117 stealth fighter crashed into a motorcycle factory, the RC8R would be the most likely outcome. Thin and angular, and wrapped with black paint, which seems invisible, though their escape radar qualities are questionable. Although few would describe the machine black and orange as "beautiful," we admire the value of the cash spent sporty design with bold form of origami. Opinions vary.

"Angular shapes and bold use of color combination of black, white and orange makes the MTI clear standout in the style of a liter class, perhaps rivaled only by the new BMW S1000RR," says the director Cramo, Pete Brissette.

"They say it's a thin line that separates genius to madness, and the RC8 is a fine line between the distinctive design of real disgust - you can choose," says Tom Roderick, MO guest rider and freelance journalist.

Like the Ducati, KTM superbike high-end is powered by a liquid-cooled V-Twin, although, again, is a little different. Her cylinders are 75 degrees instead of the traditional 90 degrees Duke of V for a more compact arrangement. The RC8-R is not done with 1148cc and 15 horsepower less than the claimed R 170 hp 10,250 rpm crankshaft made. The R has several high-tech features, such as titanium intake valves, a high 13.5:1 compression ratio and a low friction treatment of the life of his followers finger camshaft. A maximum torque of 90.7 lb-ft of Rotax engines is said to reach 8000 rpm. We found about 150 horsepower, driving the rear wheel when we were four times AMA Tuner of the Year Andrew belt test is the hypercycle.

Although the MTI to build their own structures, large chrome-molybdenum steel tube, acquires a high-end components from world leaders such as Brembo and Marchesini through the mountains of the Dolomites. Keihin fuel injection arrives in Japan.

Attitude Adjustment

We have whined for years about the lack of ergonomic adjustments on the bikes, a one-size-fits-all philosophy. In recent years we have been renting newly added features such as adjustable seat heights (BMW, Honda ST1300, Yamaha FJR, FZ6R) and foot controls (Suzuki GSX-R, Yamaha R1).

Well, KTM has increased with all the different ways to custom fit a RC8R its riders. Here is a list of
components to be resolved.

Front brake lever: almost everywhere, so no big bonus points.

Clutch: Surprisingly still not available in many modern bikes.

Control: The conversion of quasi-sport-tour-y racing bike is complete with four bolts and fewer minutes.

Seat: Not only the venue, but the cradle of all, changing the seat height from 31.7 to 32.5 inches in a matter of minutes.

Stool: A lot of legroom when set to its lowest position, but it is hard to drag. Virtually unlimited authority when in position.

Shifter: adjustable in length (3 positions), leverage and GP shift conversion.

The brake pedal: Nub adjustable in length by 3 points.

The height of the rear bodywork: An eccentric allows easy adjustment in a range of 12 mm.

Meters: displays the road or track, available in most of the couple to change the left clip-on. Road is set to display tripmeter, clock, fuel consumption, miles empty (the best and the worst), travel time and temperature. Track the timer setting screens on your lap speed, RPM and the duration of the race.

Ergonomic, much depends on how RC8R is set up (see box above). With the frame in its raised position and footrest down RC8 has more space than any Super Sport motorcycle. Riders will probably prefer the short rear section in the down position to a flat foot possible. With clip-ons in their environment seems high visions of one day 500-mile possible. A windshield provides up close but a lot of protection against the wind compared to other bikes in its class.

The forward V-Twin always fires up in less than a second, makes a quick staccato bark in the quiet engine (thanks, Erik Buell). Throttle response is instantaneous incredible exhibits minimal flywheel effect that the system rise and fall instantaneously. An LCD bar graph tachometer is located in the upper panel gauge technophile, but it is too small to be easily seen. Optimal gear change is made possible by a prominent shift light.

RC8R was introduced two seasons ago, but did not travel to America until the 2010 model year. Revisions to the original model is stiffer clutch springs for improved step 5 extra horsepower on tap. Remove the radial-mount clutch master cylinder is moderate, but we want the engagement point was not the end of its travel. Still, a broad commitment to AIDS in the region to launch high-speed, and gobs of low end and the steam is a front wheel off the ground before having the other side of the intersection.

But you need a set of experienced hands for smooth Katoom. A spring accelerator of light and negligible weight, flying conspire with intermittent fuel injection to conduct a Herky-jerky, if not manipulated, and the surge at low speeds while turning around the city.

"At the low end of the rev range, KTM was able to provide a smooth transition with little or no gas acceleration exciting area," says t-Rod. "This could be a problem with the injection of fuel or gas, even when there is almost no spring tension by turning the handle, which makes the application accelerator gently, a task even for an experienced rider. "

But during execution, the Twin is simply fascinating. A huge number of low-end torque to cause the front to go up easily in first gear, even if 50% of the gas. Bang, the first an edge to hold it upside down and the orange-crushing its rider, and the front wheel will rise again, but this time a little 'slower.

With the engine running just under 5000 rpm at 80 km / h roll-on power is incredible - it pulls so hard that I have repeatedly pressed the lever to gain access to another machine that n ' was not there, another reason we love the gear position indicators, and why we had a RC8.

The vibration of KTM V-Twin is more prominent than the 90 degrees of a Ducati double soft and perfect balance elementary and comes on the handlebars and footrests of the motor at different speeds. It is more sensitive than most objectionable. "Even if a rider can get used to the vibration produced by the KTM 75 degree V," says Pete, "the environment is much more than a Ducati 1198."

RC8s first transmission were reprimanded for below normal, while KTM has made several changes to internal transmission to improve the quality of parts for 2010 models. Change effort is light and accurate in most cases, despite the clutch upshifts sometimes but not always resist. Access to a stop neutral often frustrating.

When it's time to hit some winding roads, RC8R respond with agility of a previously unknown size liter V-Twin. A reduction in triple clamp offset 91mm paths increases to 97mm for better front-end feel, but the commission is set at a very steep 23.3 degrees. It handles very well, quickly and elegantly sparks when turning. "With RC8R is strong and precise control, you can change direction simply by a slight shift of his / her body," says multi-year test driver and all around good guy Kaming KB "I love to ride this bike. "

The RC8 cold with the help of WP shock absorbers, a subsidiary of KTM. A premium of 43 mm inverted fork is opened, and a coating of titanium-aluminum-nitride your slippers to contribute to a responsive ride. GT Premium Shock suspends the back of the RC and the stem end with low static friction TiAlN coating. The holder has three modes of adjustment (compression and rebound damping and spring preload), while the clash between the compression damping circuit in the high and low speed and higher ground clearance adjustment. An adjustable steering damper WP installation complete.

After delivery, the suspension is firm but relatively constant over the smooth roads of northern San Diego, but we felt the center was too steep when traveling on bumpy pavement. Too steep, too, a twisted Buttonwillow track with our light cavalry on board Raceway. Fortunately, the technology race Lenny Albin was the track, and some twists and turns of the key experts gave a quick tour much more consistent.

We have already said and we will repeat it: A good suspension set up can turn a vicious circle in Dreamboat, so be sure to spend time and / or money to get your number called your weight and riding style.

Suspension RC8R is burdened by a minimal amount of weight, as KTM has spent money to share light, where it is most important. RC8-cast aluminum wheels forged aluminum Marchesini wheels update since then. 6-inch rear is only 0.7 pounds lighter, but the front is a massive 1.6 kg lighter, and pay dividends to reduce steering effort and a better control of the suspension. Pirelli Diablo Super Corsa SP tires every 100 grams less than the level of professional RC8 Super Corsa on a regular basis, and the carbon fiber front fender to take out another 100 grams. KTM RC8R says the scales at 401 pounds without fuel, so we expect to weigh close to 430 pounds of its 4.3 liter tank full. It 'was an average of nearly 40 mpg in our hands.

Top-shelf brake parts also grace RC8R. Brembo radial cylinder to activate the wonderful one-piece calipers 320 mm is bitten, the latter slightly thicker than the RC8 is better dissipate heat faster to use. Angle of incidence is higher than the original amount of the trip than we are accustomed to such binders Ducati, but their absolute power has never been questioned.

A high-end feature is particularly in the absence of a slip clutch. If a Japanese 600cc sport may have, so if a $ 20,000 exotic European. This is especially true for high-compression V-Twin with an acceleration sensitive inertia and light.

In daily use, the RC8R has a split personality. The ergonomics and wind protection are enviable, and finely upholstered seat feels hard, but not entirely masochistic over long distances. Speaking of safety, we thought it was a bit slippery, especially when you wear jeans or pants textiles.

"Sculpture canyon or on the track, I noticed I had a tendency to slide forward on the seat in the tank, possibly to what appeared to be excessive weight on both hands," said Pete, adding that lowering the cradle may have solved the problem.

We want to RC8 mirrors turnsignals integrated fashion, but they were so passionate about them, when we locked arms back view, it is sometimes blurred. In this context, note the driver's gloves, the mirrors can be transmitted when the bars are activated and are in their upright position. And when we get to bitch, we complain a lot of heat from the radiator and the rear cylinder pipe, even if the insulation is wrapped on the collector. Finally, the sides of the plate RC8 seem susceptible to side winds.

Its an obvious glitch is its Jumpy throttle response, a situation aggravated when the road is bumpy. KTM press materials say "new mapping significantly improves the on / off throttle behavior," but there is still work to be done to soften the response. A gas tube-shaped cam will be mounted on all RC8R production that we have not tested, but should alleviate the problem somewhat. May also need a heavy flywheel and spring of the accelerator, or perhaps a re-FI remap.

2010 RC8R revenue demonstrates a renewed push by the Ministry of Commerce Streetbike have taken on the market. Taking into account the company's roots dirty off-road in the kingdom, the ability to specify RC8R striking the very breath of the legendary Ducati, a brand that produces the V-twin sport bikes for almost 40 years! Its innovative design, ergonomic adjustable is a leap forward, and can go up to the Ducati 1198 is a huge achievement.

The RC8R will retail for $ 19,998 when it hits U.S. dealers in February 2010. It's a big bump in the standard RC8 MSRP is $ 16.498, but in view of R is greater performance and functionality, it is a relative bargain. Easy for us to say.
